January 2017 Meetings

The regular meeting of the Lewis & Clark Conservation District Board of Supervisors will be January 12, 2017 at 1 p.m.   The meeting will be held at the USDA Service Center Conference Room, 790 Colleen Street, Helena MT 59601.  All meetings of the Conservation District are open to the public.  If you have any questions about the meetings or information, please call the CD office at 406-449-5000 ext. 112. Minutes from the December 2016 meeting Notice/Agenda for January 2017 Meeting Notice for January 2017 special meeting Preceding the regular meeting, the CD will be meeting with NRCS, DNRC and MACD representatives to discuss programs and needs within the county.  That meeting will be at the same location and will run from 9 a.m. to noon.

ACEP-WRE Sign up deadline!!!

Natural Resources Conservation Service runs the ACEP (Agricultural Conservation Easement Program).   Landowners in Montana who may be interested in specifically the Wetland Reserve Easement program (WRE) need to be aware that the application deadline for this program is October 21, 2016.  Easements can be another tool that landowners can use to keep their property working for them for the long-term. What is it? The High Tunnel System is a unique conservation practice used to extend growing season, improve plant and soil quality, reduce nutrient & pesticide transportation, improve air quality, and reduce the amount of energy used to produce crops for consumers.  This method also assists with crop production in climates with shorter growing periods.   Why consider this? The High Tunnel System supports conservation practices which address environmental concerns that correlate to the installation and use of irrigation to prevent erosion, and runoff…

Local Work Group Meeting

The next Local Work Group planning meeting will be following the Conservation District Board meeting on July 14, 2016.  The meeting should begin around 10 a.m. and will take place in the Dearborn Community Center, Highway 434, outside of Wolf Creek Montana.   The meeting notice can be found here.   The goal of this meeting is review and make adjustments to the priority resource issues within the Local Work Group geographic area and to develop some criteria to assist the NRCS in ranking project applications.   Anyone who is interested in resource concerns in Lewis & Clark County may attend and give feedback.  See the map below for location information.

Ten Mile Forestry Project Signup Deadline

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="620"] Photo credit, Helena Independent Record, January 1, 2016[/caption] The Natural Resource Conservation Service has funds available to landowners for improving their forest health.   The project is for private land and consists of pre-commercial tree thinning, fuel breaks and other practices specific to forest health.  It is a cost share--usually a per-acre payment--program to assist landowners who are concerned about the potential for wildfire and also overall health of the forest on their property. If you own land in the Ten Mile area, and are interested in your forest health, please contact the Natural Resource Conservation Service at 406-449-5000 ext. 101.  The sign up deadline is May 20th.
